1998年，由Glenn Davis、George Olsen及Jeffrey Zeldman共同倡議創建的WaSP（The Web Standards Project），可能是發起最早、且最富知名的網頁標準推廣行動團體。
1998年，微軟（Microsoft）與網景（Netscape）的瀏覽器大戰打得正火熱。
WaSP的成立，旨在降低瀏覽器大戰可能大開網路發展倒車的風險，力推W3C（World Wide Web Consortium）所制定的網頁標準，從而實現Tim Berners-Lee所提出：開放（Open）、親和（Accessible）與通用（Universal）的網路世界理想。
15年後，WaSP由現任Group Manager Aaron Gustafson發表《Our Work Here is Done》宣告解散。
Thanks to the hard work of countless WaSP members and supporters (like you), Tim Berners-Lee’s vision of the web as an open, accessible, and universal community is largely the reality. While there is still work to be done, the sting of the WaSP is no longer necessary. And so it is time for us to close down The Web Standards Project.
